According to American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor, a semi-annual survey of business owners Small business owners are finding new resources to tap and alternate ways to manage cost. "When times get tought, the tough get creative."

Here are what others are doing:
- Instituting Hire freezes
- Bartering for new products or services
- Refusing to take a salary
- Having a family member work pro bono
- Renegotiating leases and supple contracts
- Working a second job
- Cutting benefits.
